Egypt building security wall at entrance to the Suez Canal

Egypt building security wall at entrance to the Suez Canal
The Egyptian authorities are building a 65 km security fence at the southern entrance to the Suez Canal.

Security concerns over the Suez Canal have heightened with the political tensions in Egypt and in late August 2013 an attack by militants on the containership Cosco Asia was foiled by the Suez Canal Authorities.

In a circular Skuld P&I Club vessels transiting the canal had noticed works to build a security wall and fence. “This work is designed to further the security along the canal which remains under the protection of the Egyptian Armed Forces,” Skuld said. "

The latest information is that this work is now at least 45% completed, and the full length of this security fence will be 65 km long.”
In the long run there will security walls and fences at both the northern and southern entrances to the canal.

Meanwhile Skuld repeated its earlier cautions to vessels transiting the canal. “Given that the political and social situation in Egypt remains unsettled, members would be well advised to continue to exercise caution when calling at Egyptian ports and proceeding through the canal.”
