The selection of the right arbitrator was in focus at Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre’s (EMAC) second breakfast session of 2018.

Thomas Snider, from Al Tamimi & Company, focused on the arbitrator selection process. In terms of choosing an arbitrator it was outlined that it was crucial to take the candidate’s legal and jurisdictional background into consideration, their industry knowledge, and the language of the proceedings.

Meanwhile Jonathan Lux from St. Philips Chambers gave some insight into the appointment criteria from an arbitrator’s perspective.

At EMAC, we constantly endeavour to add value to the maritime sector by equipping the sector with the right knowledge. This session intended to shed light on the critical importance of the selection process of the arbitrators, and how selecting the appropriate arbitration rules can help regulate the process”, said Majid Obaid bin Bashir, acting chairman and secretary general of EMAC.

“Selecting the right arbitrator can make all the difference in having an effective arbitration.”
