Tributes have been paid to Captain Jitendra Misra after he passed away March 23.

Capt Misra was the long-serving Managing Director of Emarat Maritime, a Dubai-headquartered owner of tankers and bulk carriers.

Seatrade chairman Chris Hayman reflected on a long relationship with Capt Misra: “Captain Jitendra Misra was a towering figure in the UAE and the wider Middle East maritime community; his loss will be deeply felt by his many friends and colleagues.

“When Seatrade first came to Dubai in the nineties he was already at the helm of Emarat Maritime. His passion for shipping was obvious and it showed up in his strong advocacy of issues such as education, safety and seafarers’ welfare. He was a warm and welcoming man, and generous with his time for the many who, like us, sought his advice.”

Capt Misra started out as a deck cadet with India Steamship in 1971 and became the youngest master in the Indian fleet. After eight years in command, he came ashore to work in London before his move to Dubai in 1990, to set up the organisation which later became Emarat Maritime.

An early supporter of the UAE  Shipowners Association from its inception in 2005, Capt Misra remained active until the present day as it developed into the UAE Shipping Association.

His diverse activities in the industry included working with a Japanese shipyard on the design and development of the world’s first Ultramax bulk carrier, Dubai Sun, delivered to Emarat in 2010, a position on the executive committee of EMAC and chairmanship of the Middle East Branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

UAE Shipping Association Chairman, Capt Abdulkareem Al Mesabi said in a note to members: “Capt. Jitendra was a cherished member of the shipping fraternity and will be remembered as a passionate mariner, leader and motivator. In his career spanning over four decades, Capt. Jitendra's role in the industry, especially within the UAE, has been vast.

“His presence always lit us up with positivity. He took immense pride in his mission to promote shipping and always put forward his best efforts to influence professionalism, education and maritime safety. For his contribution from the very first UAE Shipowner's Association in 2005 to where we are today as the all-inclusive Emirates Shipping Association, he will always be appreciated.”
