The port constructed by China Communication Construction Company, will be developed as local cargo transhipment hub.
Construction of the first berth has been completed and remaining two should be completed by the end of 2020. The first three berths of Lamu Port will be able to handle 1.2m teu and will the port is will have the capacity to handle 20m teu when the project fully completed.
In 2014, Kenya Ports Authority awarded the $478m contract to China Communication Construction Company for the construction of the first three berths of the Lamu Port.
Lamu port will have a total of 32 berths and will complement the port of Mombasa for cargo transportation in and out of Kenya and its neighboring states.
