Kiani Satu oil spill off South Africa "under control"

Kiani Satu oil spill off South Africa "under control"
South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs’ Oil Spill Response team has reported that the oil spill from grounded bulker Kiani Satu is now “under control.”

The ongoing process involves closing the two estuaries either side of the grounded bulker, in order to prevent the spread of oil inland. Meanwhile, authorities report that most of the oil from the spill is travelling out to sea. In total, the Kiani Satu was carrying 330 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, and 15,000 tonnes of rice.

The vessel grounded sideways onto the shore after her anchor dragged in rough seas of 5 m and winds of 45 knots, with the allocated tug unable to keep the vessel away from the coastline.

All 19 crew members, consisting of Ukranian and Filipino nationals, have been evacuated from the site and are undergoing treatment for minor injuries.
