Pitfalls to avoid in a regulated market – an interview with Alfonso Castillero of the Liberian Registry

Even as the shipping industry is facing more stringent regulations, particularly on curbing emissions for the environment, regulations must not be seen as a negative thing for the industry – but they need to be considered carefully and implemented appropriately.

As long as the regulations are being properly debated and given enough time to consider all the ups and downs, the industry would benefit, according to Liberia International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) chief operating officer Alfonso Castillero.

In an exclusive interview with Seatrade Maritime News, Castillero stresses that what cannot and should not happen, during IMO meetings in particular, is that something is decided and then everybody walks away and continue to do their own things.

He further warns: “There are certain associations or group of experts, that when they see a regulation, instead of looking at how to really comply with that, they see how enforcing that regulation will drive or take out some players in the market – and that’s one of the problems.”

Watch the video and hear more details about Castillero’s views on the impact of regulations on the shipping industry.
