Mitsui signs $3.6bn worth of LNG charters for Cameron project
Mitsui and Co has announced charters for five LNG carriers to haul LNG from the Cameron LNG project to Japan.

Three further charters are soon to be concluded, fulfilling the company's target of eight ships to service the Cameron project in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Japanese trader stated that the charters will begin in 2017 and 2018, run for a maximum of 25 years and have a total charter hire cost of JPY400bn ($3.6bn).

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) will supply two of the chartered ships, with one from Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and two from companies in which Mitsui is a stakeholder. The ships will be a mix of newbuild vessels of 155,000 cu m Moss type and 174,000 cu m membrane type designs.

An established LNG import terminal, work is underway to transform Louisiana's Cameron LNG terminal into an import/export facility with liquefaction capabilities and an export capacity of 12m tonnes per annum. Full commercial operation of the site is due in 2019.
