Ocean Infinity located the wreck of the Stellar Daisy after a 10 day search approximately 1,800 nautical miles due west of Cape Town, South Africa, and according to Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries have now found and retrieved the VDR using a remote operated vehicle (ROV). The VDR is now being stored in de-ionized water to prevent corrosion.
The discovery of the VDR from the Stellar Daisy will hopefully shed more light on what caused the sudden sinking of the vessel 31 March 2017 while transporting iron ore from Brazil to China, was located at a depth of 3,461 metres in South Atlantic Ocean. Just two of the 24 crew survived the casualty.
Pictures taken by the ROV from Ocean Infinity also showed the IMO number of the Stellar Daisy.
The Stellar Daisy started life as a very large crude carrier (VLCC) tanker and was converted to a VLOC raising concerns over the conversion process.
