The announcement comes a day after AP Moller – Maersk completed the demerger of Maersk Drilling marking the end of restructuring started in 2016 for the listed group to focus on container transport and logistics.
In this process Hemmingsen had been ceo of the energy division which will close down by the end of June at the latest. While Maersk Drilling was listed as a separate entity, Maersk Oil was sold to Total for $7.45bn, and Maersk Tankers was acquired by AP Moller Holding for $1.17bn. Just offshore supply vessel owner Maesrk Supply Services remains in the energy division and this will be reintegrated into AP Moller – Maersk after a failure to sell or find another solution for the company.

"We have now concluded the task of finding new structural solutions for the majority of AP Moller - Maersk's energy businesses, enabling their continued development and growth under new ownership structures. I am proud of the results the Energy division as a team and my colleagues in our oil and oil related businesses have achieved," Hemmingsen said.

Hemmingsen joined the Danish company in 1981 as shipping trainee and has held posts in Denmark, Singapore and Hong Kong. He joined the company’s board in 2007 and became vice ceo in 2016.
"On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank Claus Hemmingsen for his considerable results in fronting the separation of our oil and oil related businesses, which he has done with the utmost respect for the history and legacy of the individual companies, while ensuring a foundation for their continued growth and prosperity outside A.P. Moller - Maersk," said Jim Hageman Snabe, chairman of the AP Moller - Maersk Board of Directors.
Hemmingsen said: "I am privileged to have worked for AP Moller - Maersk for almost four decades. It has been an international career which has provided continuous challenges and endless learning opportunities across multiple industries, and the opportunity for my family to live abroad for 12 years.”
Following Hemmingsen’s departure the Executive Board of AP Moller – Maersk will comprise of ceo Søren Skou, cfo Carolina Dybeck Happe, Vincent Clerc, Søren Toft and Morten Engelstoft.
