Greece’s Maran Gas Maritime has ordered a new LNG carrier at South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), making this its fifth LNG carrier newbuild order at the shipyard.

Maran Gas Maritime, the gas shipping unit of Angelicoussis Shipping Group owned by billionaire John Angelicoussis, is expected to take delivery of the 174,000 cu m LNG carrier by the first half of 2022 from DSME’s Geoje Okpo Shipyard.

DSME said that Maran Gas Maritime is one of its biggest customers who has ordered five of its six LNG carrier newbuilds this year and is also discussing additional LNG carrier orders.

The Korean shipbuilder said the large LNG carriers are equipped with its inhouse developed Advanced Partial Re-liquefaction System (A-PRS) to help reduce vessel operating costs. In addition, the availability of a virtual reality training system at DSME has enabled seafarers to experience how to handle the LNG carriers before actual operation.

To-date, DSME has won approximately $26.9bn worth of 15 new orders, including six LNG carriers, six large crude oil tankers and three submarines.
