RS updating rules and requirements in 2015

The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) plans to improve a number of its rules, requirements and notifications in 2015.

The classification society, which has over 150 vessels on order and under construction under its class, plans to modify some of its basic documentation to meet international requirements and improve convenience for clients.

RS’s Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-Going Ships will have additional distinguishing marks and notations added to it, and Finnish-Swedish ice classification standards will also be integrated into the rules.

The class society is a leader in ice class vessels, which make up a large portion of its orderbook. One such example is the world’s first arctic LNG carrier, a 300 m ship which will be capable of operating in two meter thick ice.

Involvement in LNG carrier projects has led to RS developing new equipment requirements for such ships, with supplemental requirements on materials for cargo containment systems.

The class society is also improving its requirements for organising surveys during ship construction and trials, calling on experience gained at foreign shipyards.
