Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced Monday that it has won orders for 10 LNG-fuelled aframax tankers valued at KRW751.3bn ($601m) from an Oceania-based shipowner.

The 113,000-dwt newbuildings are scheduled to be delivered by January 2022 in phases.

The South Korean shipbuilder said it has achieved 54% of its annual target of $7.8bn from orders for 29 ships equivalent to $4.2bn to-date including this latest contract. SHI added that it has diversified its orders into 11 LNG carriers, 14 crude oil tankers, one special ship, one FPSO and more.

Meanwhile, SHI signed a memorandum of understanding with Germany’s MAN Energy Solutions (MAN-ES) last Friday to collaborate on smart ship technology development.

The partnership aims to enhance operating services of main engines by applying engine diagnosis and high-tech control technology of MAN-ES to SHI’s cloud-based smart ship system.

“Equipment manufacturers have actively participated in technology development of our cloud-based smart ship system and this will provide more useful and diverse services to shipowners. By solidifying the ecosystem where both shipbuilders and equipment producers co-exist, we will take the lead in developing innovative smart ship system,” said Shim Yong-Lae, vice president of SHI Ship & Offshore Research Institute.
