Singapore progresses on LNG bunkering standards
Singapore has made progress in the development of LNG bunkering standards after completing a study on the technical standards and procedures for the bunkering operation in the port, according to Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

The study, completed together with MPA's appointed consultant Lloyd's Register, consolidated information that needs to be addressed before LNG bunkering can take place.

The study touched on the LNG bunkering standards and procedures within port limits, technical requirements and specifications for LNG bunker tankers and receiving vessels, safety standards, emergency procedures, and personnel competency standards.

Following the completion of the study, MPA said it will be organising industry consultation sessions to share the results and seek industry feedback. The port authority will then finalise the LNG bunkering standards for Singapore.

“There is an increasing need for the shipping industry to look at alternative sources of fuel and LNG is a promising option that we should consider,” said M Segar, assistant chief executive (operations) at MPA.

Singapore port recorded bunker fuel sales volume of 42.7m metric tonnes in 2012, retaining its position as the world's largest bunkering port.
