SWS delivers 'intelligent' VLOC to China Merchants Energy Shipping

One of the top Chinese shipyards, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS), has delivered a 400,000-tonne very large ore carrier (VLOC), named Pacific Vision, to China Merchants Energy Shipping. It is the first intelligent VLOC as certificated by China Classification Society (CCS) and DNV GL.

China started the Intelligent Ship 1.0 Special Project in 2016 to research and develop the intelligent vessel technology and improve the nation’s abilities of ship design, building, operation, management and maintenance. The delivery of Pacific Vision is a successfully pilot application of the intelligent concept and technology on VLOC, said an official from CCS.

Pacific20Vision201Pacific Vision, designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute, is 362 meters long and 65 meters wide, and has seven cargo holds a. Highlights of the vessel include: it is able to collect, process, and analyze information aboard, monitor cargo status, help the crew to avoid collisions in the open waters, and establish ship-to-ship communication at the sea.

The latest second-generation 400,000 tons VLOC will be deployed on iron ores transportation between China and Brazil. On its maiden voyage the ship is bound for Ponta Da Madeira in Brazil.
