UECC orders two plus two hybrid car carriers at Jiangnan Shipyard

United European Car Carriers (UECC) has  inked a contract with China’s Jiangnan Shipyard to build two new generation pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) plus options for two additional vessels. 

The ships will have a length of 169 meters, a width of 28 meters and a carrying capacity of 3,600 car equivalent units. Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) will lead the vessel design. 

The vessels will be equipped with a battery hybrid LNG solution, which will reduce the CO2 emissions by about 25 %. The vessels will also be equipped with dual-fuel LNG engines for main propulsion and auxiliaries plus battery packages for further reduction of CO2 emissions. 

The PCTCs will be classified by DNV GL, and be deployed on European routes after delivery. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2021.

Jiangnan Shipyard currently focuses on the construction of liquefied gas carriers, bulk carriers plus oil & chemical product carriers. 

UECC, jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Wallenius Lines, is a leading short sea ro-ro service provider. The company operates a fleet of 17 medium sized PCTCs with loading capacity ranging from 1,060 to 4,750 car equivalent units.
