The Sefarina, owned by Chemgas Shipping, was fueled with LNG using a truck-to-ship bunkering operation, in what the port saw as test case for the bunkering of seagoing vessels. LNG bunkering for barges has been available to the port of Antwerp since 2012.
The Sefarina also became the first vessel to receive a particulates discount.
The port of Antwerp aims to have a permanent LNG bunkering facility by 2019 and is seeking a candidate to build and operate the refueling station.
