With more than three months to go till opening day of Posidonia on 4 June, the event is shaping up to be a true celebration of everything shipping stands for.

While a degree of uncertainty is still hanging over a recovering shipping industry, the June 4-8 exhibition gathering sees an ideal opportunity to the rub shoulders with industry leaders who flock to Greece every two years to catch-up with the latest industry innovations and generally talk shipping.

Posidonia 2018 is set to feature over 1,850 companies from a wide range of maritime industry sectors that are currently preparing and planning their participation, which is expected to attract over 22,000 shipping executives and government delegation members.

With those making Greek shipping the industry leader out in force, the biennial Athens fair is a magnet for the global industry, with shipyards, shipping companies, mechanical equipment producers and shipping hubs vying not only to attract the interest of the world’s biggest shipping community, but also listen to what it has to say about an industry facing huge challenges.

Compared to the same month ahead of the previous record breaking edition in June 2016, organisers have already taken 10% more bookings. A new feature is the 4th Energy & Shipping Seminar, organised by the Institute of Energy of South East Europe (IENE) on June 8. This will provide an in-depth analysis of global oil and gas markets and examine the factors that define the correlation between energy cargoes and shipping.

In all some 28 seminars and conferences will be held in parallel with the exhibition.

Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia’s state oil company, and its partners; Lamprell; Bahri; and Hyundai HI have chosen Posidonia for the global unveiling of the International Maritime Industries (IMI) jv. When the yard is fully operational in 2022, IMI will offer new build and maintenance, repair and overhaul of vessels, including VLCCs and offshore rigs, indeed, to date IMI has committed orders for 20 rigs and 52 VLCCs to be built over the next decade.

Some 20 national pavilions have been booked, anchored by shipbuilding nations, China, Japan and South Korea while maritime centres such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Denmark, the US and The Netherlands will be present. But national participation is not only reserved for traditional maritime nations, as newcomers Luxembourg, Georgia and Poland will make their debut alongside traditional flag states.
