Digitalisation is set to be in focus at SMM 2018 trade show in Hamburg next week with highlights from across the industry, including smart shipping, 3D printing and autonomous shipping.

Technologies will be showcased on a digital route through the exhibition as well as key issues discussed at conferences at the event.

“From agile start-ups offering specialised software applications, to market-leading suppliers of maritime technology offering entire portfolios of digital systems, our 13 halls and 93,000 m2 of exhibition space address every aspect,” said Claus Ulrich Selbach, business unit director – Maritime and Technology Fairs & Exhibitions at Hamburg Messe und Congress.

A special exhibition will be presented on 3D printing with the North German Maritime Cluster. A printing machine by Gefertec will enable visitors to witness the 3D printing of blades for controllable pitch propellors, with each blade taking an estimated eight hours to be made.

“Our 3DMP process can be used with a wide range of materials. This opens up vast new possibilities for the manufacture of maritime components,” said Gefertec ceo Marcus Ortloff.

The show will not only at technology for ship operations but also mobile tracking and booking apps that designed to streamline the logistics chain.

“Digitalisation is not the goal, nor is autonomous shipping; these are tools and ways you might develop it. The goal is maritime transport systems that meet the needs of the next generation,” said Clarkson Research president Martin Stopford.
