Containerships takes on second LNG-powered vessel

Containerships takes on second LNG-powered vessel

Containerships, subsidiary of CMA CGM, has taken delivery of its second LNG-powered containership, the Containerships Polar, suited for navigational and climatic challenges of its operational area in Northern Europe and the Baltics.

Built at China’s Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard, the 1,380-teu, dual-fuel ship will conduct its first LNG bunkering in Rotterdam port where it will take on approximately 200 tonnes of LNG via ship-to-ship bunkering.

The ice-class Containerships Polar will be deployed in the redesigned weekly BALT 2 service which links Northern Europe with the Baltic states and Russia.

A total of seven major European ports are served, including Rotterdam which acts as an important transhipment hub, but also as bunkering port for the LNG vessels.

Two sister ships Containerships Arctic and Containerships Aurora are expected to join the company’s fleet at the end of the year. The Containerships Nord is the first in operation.

Containerships is looking to eventually operate 20 LNG-powered vessels by 2022.
