The $35m investment, which also includes 14 new rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), is the latest phase of RSGT’s expansion at Jeddah Islamic Port which is becoming an increasingly important regional transhipment hub for very large container ships on the world’s most important liner trade between Asia and Europe. The new equipment takes the terminal’s crane count to 12 super post-panamax quay cranes out of a total of 14.
The terminal’s managing director, Jens Floe, commented: “By investing in our state-of-the-art infrastructure, we are further establishing Red Sea Gateway Terminal as one of the best equipped and most technologically advanced terminals on the Asia Europe trade lane.”
The new cranes boost the terminal’s annual capacity from 1.8m to 2.5m teu and provide more capacity for handling the largest container ships. With an under-spreader clearance of 52m, the ZPMC cranes can stack up to 11 tiers of boxes, making RSGT the only terminal in Jeddah with this capability.
Expansion of the Suez Canal has already demonstrated its appeal to the operators of the largest container vessels, and Jeddah is ideally placed as a key transhipment port for the region, with minimal deviation.
