The adoption of technology in shipping should be seen as enabler for the shipping industry allowing skilled maritime professionals to improve safety and efficiency.

While technology can be viewed as a threat to some working in the industry a technical seminar hosted Elcome International and the UAE Branch of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) underscored the positive benefits to safety and efficiency of operation.

“New technologies in conjunction with skilled and experienced professionals will bring improved levels of safety, lower levels of pollution and higher revenues than we see now,” Nikeel Idnani, Honorary Secretary of IMarEST UAE told 150 delegates maritime professionals at the seminar.

“The willingness to engage with bold, revolutionary ideas such as emerging technologies are key drivers behind a company’s progressive outlook, creating high economic value.”

Jimmy Grewal, executive director of Elcome International stated, “Technology should be an enabler. Digitalization can take operational efficiency to the next level for shipping companies committed enough to make the effort to make it work for them.”

Panellists at the seminar agreed maritime companies should embrace rather than fear technology.
