Reaching out to the public about offshore support vessels
Some 3,200 people in Singapore got the chance to go onboard and learn about the workings of an OSV last week, in an event held as part of Singapore Maritime Week 2016.
The OSV@Vivo event saw the vessels Pacific Legacy, owned by Swire Pacific Offshore and VOS Prince, from Vroon moored outside the popular waterfront shopping mall Vivo City from Thursday to Saturday.
Offshore vessels by their very nature working offshore and not something most people get to see let alone board and understand the work that they do.
According to the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) an estimated 3,200 people boarded the vessels over the three day period with members of public showed around by volunteer guides to give them a real taste of the role of the offshore support sector.
Visitors included 650 students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) who attended in pre-arranged groups.
On Friday morning an official opening event was graced by Singapore Senior Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo.
At the end of the three days, once the vessels were closed to the general public, a closing party was held onboard with Andrew Tan, chief executive of the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) as guest of honour. This included the launching performance official Singapore sea shanty “From the sea I’ll come home”.
And let's not forget official mascot “Ah Huat” which we will leave to our Singaporean readers to understand the significance.
