Equinor bags New York State offshore wind project

As the offshore wind industry starts to expand on the US East Coast Norway’s Equinor has won a $3bn project in New York State.

Equinor won the 816 megawatt project which is the largest commitment to offshore wind in the US to date. The project is expected to be develop with 60 – 80 offshore wind turbines each with a capacity of more than 10 MW.

Equinor has secured a 80,000 acre lease area in New York Bight for the Empire Wind project which will provide enough power for 500,000 homes.

“We have demonstrated that we can be successful in fierce competition, with our first wind project outside of Europe. The project will be the biggest wind farm under contract in our portfolio so far. We are looking forward to developing Empire Wind together with local authorities, local communities and the US industry,” says Pål Eitrheim, executive vice president for Equinor New Energy Solutions.
