ABS has been engaged by Genesis North America (GNA), a major subcontractor of China's Offshore Oil Engineering Co., Ltd. (COOEC), to support the Ruya production capacity improvement plan for Qatar’s Al Shaheen field.

The contract is the latest addition to the group’s growing activities in Qatar across its upstream and downstream operations, including its LNG Academy in Doha and remote survey work with Qatar Shipyard Technology Solutions.

An ABS advanced analysis team will lead a safety engineering program providing risk mitigation and asset integrity support, as well as performing a number of critical studies such as dropped object analysis for subsea pipelines and cables.

Al Shaheen is one of the world’s largest carbonate fields and is the largest oil field offshore Qatar, approximately 70 km northeast of Ras Laffan. The Ruya project will be executed over five years and aims to develop 550m barrels of oil per day. It is expected to boost production of the Al Shaheen field by approximately 100,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) with first oil in 2027.

QatarEnergy announced a series of EPC packages for the project earlier this year, including a $900m subsea pipeline and cable package to COOEC. The size of GNA’s contract with ABS was not announced.

“ABS is providing a powerful solution for GNA, with world class engineering services developed through more than 70 years of experience supporting offshore operations. We are proud to be able to support this project, which has such potential to boost production from a globally significant field,” said John McDonald, ABS President and COO.
