Brazil’s Santos port to remain public-owned says Minister
Brazil Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, said earlier this week that the port of Santos will remain public but emphasised that there is potential for private sector partnerships.
“We will not privatise the port of Santos, and we will also expand the dialogue with the entire productive sector of São Paulo,” the Minister said in an interview with CNN Brasil.
“The Port of Santos being public does not repeal the possibility of public-private partnerships (PPPs) that can be developed internally. This is the direction we want to work towards. The port doesn’t need to be privatised for us to have privatisations,” he added.
Last week, Costa Filho stated that the port has nearly $620 million (BRL 3 billion) in cash and will lead the largest project of the New Growth Acceleration Programme (Novo PAC), the construction of the Santos-Guarujá tunnel. The New Growth Acceleration Programme (PAC) will have private investment as its flagship.
Costa Filho assumed the Ministry of Ports and Airports last week amid a ministerial reshuffle by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
