Brazil’s port of Santos closed 2020 with an all-time record in containerised cargo to 4.23m teu.

Container volumes at the Brazilian port were up 1.6% over the previous record of 2019 with 4.27m teu, according to the Port of Santos Authority (SPA) statistics department.

In December, the port precinct moved 437,400 teu, a 20% growth in container handling compared to the same month of 2019 and an increase of 9.5% compared to November, which had already recorded the best performance in a month with 399,300 teu.

Considering all cargo, the port closed the year with 146.6m tonnes, up 9.4% over 2019.

"The historical record of cargo movement reflects the recovery of the economy as well as the measures implemented by the port management, in line with the Federal Government's sanitary guidelines," said SPA’s director of operations Marcelo Ribeiro

"Moreover, in a pandemic scenario, the result shows the strength of agribusiness and the resilience of the port in maintaining the flow of goods, that reflects positively on the participation of the Santos complex in the country's commercial chain.”
