First call by MOL car carrier in Cambodia
A Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) car carrier has made a first call for such a vessel type in Cambodia.
The 6,400 standard passenger car capacity, MOL-operated Grand Orion was the company’s first car carrier to call in Cambodia when it berth at the Port of Sihanoukville this week.
The vessel discharged around 12,000 tons of construction machinery at the port. In commemoration of the first call, Grand Orion Captain Denis C. De la Peña received a memento from Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.
At present most cars importing into Cambodia, both new and secondhand, are carried in containers or on trailers, but MOL said that expected increases in automobile imports should see more regular calls by dedicated car carrier vessels.
The Grand Orion called at a deepwater multipurpose terminal developed with the support of the Japanese government that opened in May last year.
“MOL considers the call an important first step to prepare for possible future demand,” the company said.
