Höegh Osaka refloating delayed due to water ingress
Salvors have delayed plans to refloat the grounded car carrier Höegh Osaka on Wednesday and it was found more water had entered the vessel than previously thought.
In a statement issued on Tuesday evening the UK’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency said: “Following the completion of the salvors calculations this evening it has been decided that there will not be an attempt to refloat the Höegh Osaka tomorrow [Wednesday].
“The salvors calculations revealed that more water has entered the vessel than previously thought.”
As a result alternative options to secure the vessel will be taken until it can be refloated.
The Höegh Osaka was grounded deliberately on Bramble Bank outside the port of Southampton on Saturday after the ship developed a severe list of over 45 degrees.
Salvors have found that cargo remains in position on the vessel and the movement of on deck plant caused a slight crack in the hull.
