The vessel was received by on 16 April Oakland International Container Terminal operated by SSA Marine.
The MSC Anna worked two shifts on this call at OICT, moving 1,500 containers, and is one of the largest containerships to call in North America.
“We have been anticipating larger vessels, like the MSC Anna, calling OICT and to prepare we have made significant investments in our cranes as well as other equipment and infrastructure. We are fully prepared and ready to handle additional Ultra Large Container Vessels,” said Jim Rice, OICT general manager.
Port of Oakland maritime director John Driscoll, commented: “We’re not newcomers at this. We work big ships every day, and the folks on the docks are proving once again that Oakland can handle them efficiently.”
The largest containership to call the port previously was the 18,000 teu CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin in 2016. Disruption caused to the container trades by COVID-19 has seen lines deploying some of their largest vessels on an adhoc basis on the transpacific trade.
