A new port at Haifa, Israel, developed and operated by Shanghai International Port (SIPG), has officially commenced operation.

The opening ceremony was held at two sites respectively in Haifa and Shanghai, China.

The new automated container port means ships with a carrying capacity of over 18,000 teu can berth in the port of Haifa for the first time, and opens a new portal for Israel to connect with the world.

Gu Jinshan, chairman of SIPG, said the opening of the new Haifa terminal is a significant move for SIPG to promote internationalization. SIPG will develop the Haifa Bay terminal to be an advanced intelligent and green port, with an aim to become the biggest container handling center in Israel and a crucial trading hub in central Europe.

In 2015, Israel Port authority granted SIPG a 25-year concession to run the port. Construction was officially launched in 2018. The first phase project, with a designed annual handling volume of 1.06m teu is complete.

The second phase terminal project under construction will have an annual container handling capacity of 800,000 teu.
