The expanded Suez Canal, turned around in record time, is only a small fraction of the work being undertaken in Egypt, according to Sherine Naggar, chairman of consultancy Naggar Shipping.

"We want to tell the shipping world to wake up to what Egypt is doing. We have had a lot of stability in the past few months, ever since the new administration took over. We have had our share of terrorism but who in the world hasn’t?”

"Today, Egypt is embarking on several mega-projects. The Suez Canal project is actually just the foundation, and it is coupled with the new Suez Canal industrial and logistics zone." Other little-known developments included $4.2bn of new tunnels underneath the Canal, for both cars and rail freight, as well as 4,500 km of new roads connecting various destinations. "This project is due to close at the end of September as well.

"Our President is known as 'Mr. One-Year.' Like the canal, the contractors said the project will take three years, but our president said no, it must be developed in one year, by the end of September. Three million acres of reclaimed desert land, which has started to show some green, will be ready next June - also one year."

"We have a lot of export potential, and we want to make more of our location and of the Suez canal," Naggar concluded.
