Panama ports container volumes grow 7.5% in Q1

Panamanian ports posted a healthy container volumes growth of 7.5% during the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2020 according to the Panama Maritime Authority statistics department.

Box volume grew to 2.09m teu in January to March, up 7.5% from 1.94m teu registered the year before.

For the first time in a couple of years, Evergreen’s Colon Container Terminal (CCT) was out of the red, posting an increase of 5.9% with 191,002 teu. Also on the Atlantic side, Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT-Panama) volume grew by 5% to 678,343 teu.

 Balboa, on the Pacific side and administrated by Hutchison’s Panama Port Company, saw an increase of 24.4% to 589,668 teu while the Atlantic terminal, Cristobal, registered 0.3% increase to 284,286 teu. PSA-Panama, posted a decrease of 6.1% with 300,457 teu.
