Panama’s Colon Container Terminal adds hybrid yard cranes

Colon Container Terminal (CCT) in Panama has received 12 new hybrid RTGs (Rubber Tyred Gantry) cranes.

The $23 million-investment is aimed at optimises the terminal’s efficiency and competitiveness and improving environmental sustainability.

CCT, on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal is owned by Evergreen Marine.   The new equipment will reinforce its position as a key player in the logistics infrastructure of Panama and the Caribbean region, said CCT.

The hybrid RTGs are capable of stowing up to five containers high plus one additional container, significantly improving the operational efficiency of the port.  

“The addition of these 12 hybrid RTGs, manufactured by ZPMC, demonstrates our strong commitment to sustainability and modernisation of our operations. This investment assures our operational capacity and reaffirms our commitment to the environment and the country's economic growth,’ said Willian Elliott, President of CCT.

The new hybrid RTGs combine electric and diesel engines, allowing for more efficient operation and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
