The Port of LA handled 833,035 teu in June this year its strongest month since July last year, and 5% lower than last year’s record volume. The strong result was recorded despite work slowdowns by members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) early in the month before a new six-year labour deal was agreed for US West Coast ports.

“Cargo volume has increased a remarkable 70% since February with four months of consecutive gains,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka during a media briefing Wednesday.

The gateway port witnessed a 24% decline in throughput in the first half of the year to 4.14 million teu.

Having gradually rebounded since February volumes are expected to ease this month but the US West Coast port remains upbeat. “Although we will likely see cargo ease in July, I’m optimistic that the second half of 2023 will show improved performance compared to the first six months.”
