Port of Santos container volume up 20% in first 8 months

Total year-to-date cargo movement reached 101m tonnes, an increase of 3.1% over the volume operated in the same period of 2020.

The number of calls during the year decreased, showing a higher capacity of vessels passing through the Port of Santos. In August, there was a reduction of 8.0% compared to 2020, with 391 calls compared to 425 in the same month last year. In the first eight months of this year, there was a drop of 1.9%, with 3,242 calls compared to 3,305 in the same period of 2020.

Liquid bulk presented a result 0.3% higher than the same period last year, accumulating 12.1m tonnes in 2021, the best record of the period. The positive result was guaranteed by the good performance of diesel oil shipments up 45.8%), followed by fuel oil  up 26.1% and citrus juices up 27.6%.

For their part solid bulks fell 4.6% in the accumulated in the eight months of the year, to 50.4m tonnes, compared to 2020. Despite this reduction, it remains the second-best record of the period. Fertilizer imports showed growth both for the year - 22.6% - and in August - 39.3%.

Imports grew 25.0%, mainly of container and fertilizer imports, which rose sharply 41.6% and 39.3%, respectively.

Exports recorded a reduction of 23.2%. The drop was mainly due to lower exports of sugar minus 35.3% and corn minus 46.5%. Liquid bulk saw the best record for the period in monthly movement, up 0.3%, reflecting higher exports of gasoil up 84.6%, fuel oils up 46.0% and citrus juices increased by 34.7%.
