Port of Santos sees 10.2% jump in cargo volumes

The Port of Santos, Brazil, handled 110.1m tonnes of cargo in the first nine months of 2020, up 10.2% year-on-year.

The record is above 9.7% growth, the previous record for the same nine months that was set in 2018.

ontainerised cargo, meanwhile, totalled 3.01m teu, a drop of 1.6% compared to 2019.

Santos’ officials expect to exceed 134m tonnes of cargo moved in 2019. The largest cargo segment is dry bulk, which totalled 59m tonnes with a 19% increase, also a record for the Port of Santos. Liquid bulk registered an increase of 10.6% with 13.7m tonnes, exceeding by 8.2% the 2017 best year for this type of cargo.

General loose cargo fell by 2.1% to 4m tonnes, despite the good performance for paper pulp.

There were 3,692 ships served between 1 January and 30 September, a 2.1% growth compared to 2019.
