Portugal’s Port of Sines maintained its growth in the first quarter of this year with container volumes showing a 16% increase to 440,645 teu.

Last year the port’s container volumes grew by 13% last year.

Containerised import and export cargo reached 104,391 teu, and all cargo segments amounted to almost 12m tonnes handled in Q1, a growth of 10%. Port officials said that the port did see any impact following the recent crisis caused by the blockade of the Suez Canal.

The general cargo segment, which includes containers, reached 5.6m tonnes and contributed decisively to the overall results of the port. In the liquid bulk segment, which includes crude, refined and natural gas, there was a year-on-year growth of 4%, keeping Sines as the country's main port for energy products.

The port said positive quarter must be coupled with the resilience shown by the entire port community of Sines, which, in a pandemic context, allowed to maintain the supply chains in favour of the needs of the economy.

With these 2021 early reports, port officials say they make it possible to foresee another positive year for the Port of Sines.

The expansion of the Container Terminal - Terminal XXI, which is administrated by PSA-Sines is continuing without any interference in the port's operation. The expansion, once concluded will represent a capacity increase from 2.3m teu to 4.1m teu annually.
