Record H1 container volumes for Barcelona port

The Port of Barcelona reported record container volumes in the hit record levels in the first half of the year as the port bounced back from impact of Covid-19 lockdowns a year earlier.

Damià Calvet, who has just taken over as chairman of the Barcelona Port Authority, succeeding Mercé Conesa, announced the port's traffic results for the first six months. Total traffic between January and June was 32.7m tonnes, a 16.8% increase from pandemic-depressed movements a year earlier.

Container traffic was especially strong at 1.8m teu, up 31% from a year earlier, but also a new record, beating by 4.2% the 1.7m teu registered in the first half of 2019. Transhipment grew by 52.2%, while origin and destination traffic gained 18.1%. Containerised exports grew by 19% and imports by 16% over pre-pandemic 2019 results.

In other traffic categories, new vehicle movements gained by 31.1% over last year, but were 31% below the first half of 2019.

Bulk solids were up by 8.1%, to 2.3m tonnes. Bulk liquids, by contrast, slipped by 12.4% to 5.6m tonnes. Imports of natural gas were down by 51%, while transit movements of gasoline dropped 56%.
