Record June container volumes for Port of Long Beach
As demand for container shipping surges the Port of Long Beach has seen a huge bounce back in volumes compared to a year earlier.
The US West Coast gateway facility reported a 41.1% year-on-year jump in volumes in June to handle 842,446 teu last month. This represents a record June volume for the Port of Long Beach surpassing June 2022 pandemic peak by 7,032 teu.
Demand for container shipping has surged in recent months with an early peak season driven by shippers concerned at supply chain disruption caused by the Red Sea crisis and vessel diversions via the Cape of Good Hope.
For the first half of 2024 the Port of Long Beach moved 4.29 million teu during up 15% from the same period last year.
“We are recapturing market share and consumer spending is driving cargo to our docks as we head into the peak shipping season,” said Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero. “I see modest growth for the second half of 2024 as we strengthen our competitiveness and continue to invest in our rail infrastructure projects that will maximize cargo velocity efficiently and sustainably for decades to come.”
