The ship in question was the 19,273 teu Cosco Shipping Aquarius, operated by Hong Kong-based shipping line Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), which called the port at end-June.
SGP reports that its team painstakingly planned the whole handling operation, which required close teamwork between central planners, brokers, transporters and shippers “working in perfect harmony while keeping safety in check.”
SGP is a 51:49% joint venture between Saudi’s Public investment Fund and PSA International of Singapore. Earlier this year it became sole container terminal operator at King Abdulaziz Port, taking over operation of both the First and Second Container Terminals at the Port.
Under the terms of the new 30-year BOT agreement the joint venture will invest at least SAR7bn ($1.87bn) with a view to turning the port into a major container hub with annual capacity of 7.5m teu. The port is already the largest Saudi facility on the Gulf coast with 43 berths, an area of 19sq km and annual capacity of 105m tons.
