Shanghai and Hamburg ports join hands for green shipping corridor

The latest green corridor development in an effort to decarbonise shipping on key routes is set to be between the ports of Shanghai and Hamburg.

The Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission, Hamburg Port Authority, Cosco Shipping Lines and Shanghai International Port (Group) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on jointly developing the green shipping corridor.

The cooperation expects to work with shipping companies, equipment and technology suppliers, energy providers and terminal operators to the ships that dock at the two ports can achieve carbon neutrality as soon as possible, accelerate the decarbonisation of the shipping industry and the green transformation of the two ports. 

According to the MoU, the parties will jointly promote the construction and use of shore power at the port of Shanghai and Hamburg, explore and promote the necessary infrastructure, regulations and preferential policies needed for green fuel supply, use and refueling.

Shanghai Port is also working with the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach to promote the green shipping corridor development for trans-Pacific trading.
