Shetland port renews its vessel monitoring system with Transas

Due for completion in May 2016, the new system at the port, which handles more than 12m gt, or more 5,000 vessels, annually, will be based on the Navi-Harbour software solution from Transas.

The project will comprise the renovation of Lerwick’s port control building, in conjunction with Shetland firm H Williamson & Sons, to incorporate the Transas’ suite of hardware, comprising Northrop Grumman Sperry Marine Vision Master radars, AIS transponders, a Jotron VHF communication system, Gill meteorological sensors and an APC Power Backup System.

“The new system will modernise Lerwick Harbour’s monitoring system, improving real-time information available to the Controllers handling shipping movements and the navigational assistance provided by Port Control,” said Port Authority deputy harbourmaster Captain Alexander Simpson. “The investment is another important step in our ongoing development programme which is adding to the port’s capacity and competitiveness.”
