The frontline worker has been brought to the centre of peoples’ consciousness in 2020.

Across all sectors around the globe, we have witnessed how frontline workers have stepped up as the world began to shut down, ensuring that vital sectors continued to operate.

Making international headlines also and forming a global debate was the plight of the seafarers, who became caught out at sea, unable to move due to restrictions and have had to grapple with medical and mental health issues whilst in transit. Whilst some progress has been made, this is not a straightforward issue to resolve and that, coupled with the ever-changing environment caused by the pandemic, will continue to need awareness-raising and solutions implemented.

How can the HSSE challenge now be confronted in this ‘New Normal’ era?

Day-to-day port operations are now more challenging than ever, with not only having to keep port workers safe but also having to ensure terminal operations continue to run smoothly.

Ports have always and continue to be a hub of activity, with many processes and interactions taking place over 24 hours and with the health and safety of the workforce already of paramount importance, COVID-19 has added yet further complexity to this.

With ports now having to minimise workers’ exposure to each other – very difficult in an environment where hundreds of people interact and move around during any given shift – whilst also having to cope with a high number of absentee workers and still deliver upon moving cargo efficiently through the port to its final destination, new rules are now being implemented, additional checks established, and further protections introduced to assist frontline workers.

This tough new balancing act is not just a question of navigating through the current crisis – hot topics to be discussed include:

  • The challenging new environment for port workers during the COVID-19 crisis
  • How have ports & terminals been impacted and what changes have been implemented to continue day-to-day operations?
  • What regulatory changes are needed to support port worker safety?
  • What will the ‘New Normal’ port operations look like as the industry adapts to post COVID-19 working conditions?
  • How to embrace the financial, technological and operational opportunities and challenges brought on by the pandemic

Meet our panel of experts:
