The work requires an investment of $176m and the construction will begin at the end of the year.
“Today we signed the contract for the construction of a new dock in Puerto Bolivar. A private investment of $176m that will give way to the development of the province of El Oro,” said Lenin Moreno, president of Ecuador.
The 450-metre long dock will allow the entry of vessels of greater depth and capacity, diversifying new lines of export to the world to boost the local economy and foreign trade for Ecuador, with major products such as bananas, shrimp, copper, among others.
The port expansion includes new container yards, refrigerated warehouse and new access roads.
“With the concessions we have achieved and continue to achieve important projects that strengthen connectivity in all its forms,” said the Minister of Transport and Public Works Gabriel Martínez.
Puerto Bolivar currently handles 65% of the province's export banana cargo. In March 2020, around 36,000 tonnes of copper concentrate were exported to China for the first time.
