Fires at the earthquake damaged port of İskenderun in Türkiye are reported to have been extinguished and container lines are diverting services as the facility is closed until further notice.

İskenderun Limak terminal was severely damaged due to strong earthquakes in region and fires broke out in the terminal’s container yard.

“The fire has now been extinguished, and the damage assessment is currently pending,” an advisory from container line Hapag-Lloyd said. It said ships were not currently able to operate at the port.

Maersk said that the port of İskenderun remained closed until further notice and it was unable to deliver cargoes that were bound for the port. “We will instead be holding containers in nearby ports and hubs for three weeks from today (Wednesday 8 February) at no extra cost while we plan next steps and final deliveries.”

It is also offering a free change of destination to deliver cargoes to any other Turkish ports within operational constraints.

Ocean Network Express said in customer advisory, “Subsequently, with immediate effect all services from/to Iskenderun are suspended until further notice. For all cargo currently on the water or in transit, please contact your local ONE representative for contingency plans.”

Türkiye’s largest container port Mersin is operational without any reported issues according to ONE.

At least 15,000 people are reported to have died in quake hit regions in Türkiye and Northern Syria.
