Port of Santos container volumes 2.9% in Jan - Aug

Container throughput at the Port of Santos grew 2.9% to 3.3m teu in the period January-August compared to the first eight months of 2021.

Volumes reached 456,500 teu in August, up 12% year on year.  The flow of containers and agribusiness goods boosted the port’s global figures, leading it to a new record for the year, with 110.1m tonnes, up 9% over the same period of the previous year.

The growth observed in August took the port sector by surprise, totalling 14.6m tonnes, an increase of 21.4% over August 2021, making it the best performance for the month.

Year to date, shipments totaled 80.3 million tonnes, an increase of 11.1% compared to the same period in 2021.

Year to date, the products that stood out the most in exports were pulp, with an expressive movement of 5.4m tonnes, an increase of 61.2%; corn, with 6.4m tonnes (+78.0%); soybeans, with 23.8m tonnes (+9.9%); soybean meal in bulk, with 6.2m tonnes (+32.0%); and animal meat, with 1.5m tonnes (+31.8%). In turn, fertilizers stood out in imports, with 5.5m tonnes (+13.1%).

In the first eight months of the year, 3,454 vessels passed through the port, a number 6.2% higher than that recorded in the same period last year.
