NOx Solution for Emission Control Areas Eminox SCR technology for Tier III

Eminox, one of Europe’s leading emissions technology providers, is turning its attention to marine engines in preparation for the Tier III legislation coming into force in 2016. Leveraging its extensive expertise in developing SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) exhaust after-treatment solutions for on and off-road manufacturers, it can develop both silencer and after treatment solutions from concept through to manufacture within its range of in-house facilities.

NOx Emission Control Areas (ECAs) come into force in 2016, requiring vessels to meet Tier III marine emissions standards. The stringent limits within these ECAs means new and remanufactured marine engines will require exhaust after-treatment in order to meet the standard and enter these zones.  The ECAs cover the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, most of the US and Canadian coast and the US Caribbean, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

“The incoming Tier III legislation will present some major challenges to marine manufacturers, that haven’t previously faced such tough emissions requirements,” said Mike Galey, Director, Eminox. “Eminox has extensive experience in meeting emissions requirements at this level and can develop innovative SCR solutions for a wide range of marine vessels.”

Eminox SCR solutions are capable of reducing NOx emissions by more than 80% and incorporate unique space saving mixing technology for fitment to vessels with a restricted space envelope. Designs have also been developed including specialist urea injection and regeneration strategies to avoid urea deposits.

Eminox’s experienced engineering teams use a variety of tools and techniques, including CAD design, computational fluid dynamics, noise vibration and harshness analysis and finite element analysis, to deliver innovative concepts that are ‘right first time.’ Eminox can also offer in-house rapid prototyping, in-house tooling, a cellular layout for flexible manufacturing and validation tools for fast and flexible response.

Eminox has supplied exhaust systems to OEMs since 1988 and emissions solutions since 1997, beginning with option-fit DPFs (Diesel Particulate Filters) for on –road vehicle and engine manufacturers. Its specialist SCR capability was originally developed to help on-road manufacturers meet the Euro IV, V and EEV standards and it has gone on to develop SCR  solutions for some of Europe’s leading manufacturers of non-road mobile machinery and generators.
