Classification society ABS has appointed a new global lead for the container sector in the backyard of one its biggest competitors DNV.

Houston-headquartered ABS has appointed Christoph Rasewsky as Global Container Sector Lead in Hamburg.

Rasewsky brings with experience working for container line Hapag-Lloyd and the Port de Barcelona as well as previous roles with Technolog and Hamburg Port Consulting, and has a specialism in ultra-large containerships.

Joining ABS Rasewsky will be based in Hamburg, which is also home to DNV’s maritime business, which has strong containership business that came from the merger with Germanischer Lloyd.

“ABS is the leading class society in the containership market, and the first to class LNG- powered containerships and the only class working with methanol-powered vessels. We support many of the very largest vessels in the global fleet as well as the biggest operators and have a proud record of innovation and technological advances,” said Vassilios Kroustallis, ABS Senior Vice President, Global Business Development.

“By appointing Christoph, we are underscoring our commitment to offering clients the highest levels of service and the latest thinking on technology and operations.”

ABS flagged its involvement in container shipping from the voyage of the first containership Ideal X from the US in 1956.
