“The Bimco board is delighted to put forward Nikolaus Schues for election at the Bimco General Meeting in the summer of 2021. The board highly appreciates his hard work, insight and commitment to making shipping a better and more sustainable industry,” said Anastasios Papagiannopoulos, immediate past president of Bimco, managing director of Common Progress (Greece), and chairperson of Bimco’s Nominations & Governance Committee.
Chao will take over from Bimco’s first female president Sadan Kaptanoglu in 2021 for Schues to move into Chao’s president designate role.
Bimco presidents serve a two-year term, with organisational continuity ensured with incoming president designate sitting on the board for two years, before being put up for election as president. The outgoing presidents remain on the board for an additional two years as immediate past presidents.
Schues has served as Bimco vice president and board director for Germany and is currently appointed in his personal capacity. As ceo of Germany’s Reederei F. Laeisz, he oversees a fleet of containerships, car carriers, LPG carriers and research vessels.
“I have worked together with Nikolaus Schues for several years now, and he always presents his positions in a considered, educated and fair-minded way. I think he will be a great asset for Bimco, and for the industry as a whole,” commented Kaptanoglu, Bimco president and ceo of Turkey’s Kaptanoglu Shipping.
The election of both the next Bimco president and the president designate will take place at the Bimco General Meeting in the summer of 2021.
Bimco, a not-for-profit international shipping association, has around 1,900 members in more than 120 countries, representing 59% of the world’s tonnage.
