The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said six merchant vessels had been involved in the search since a shipping broadcast was the night of 17 March.

Ships and planes are searching an area of the Southern Indian Ocean 2,500 km southwest of Perth.

“Two merchant ships are now currently in the search area,” AMSA said in a statement on Saturday.

Among vessels in the search has been the car carrier Höegh St. Petersburg part of the Amver programme.

The disappearance of flight MH370 on 8 March has baffled aviation experts, however, information from satellite communications provider Inmarsat has focused the search in an arc running from the ocean off Southwest Australia through to central Asia.
